Q-Look My Watch List - Buy/Sell/Hold Research Opinion as of 8/20/2008

Your "My Watch List - Buy/Sell/Hold" center allows you to store a list of up to about 50 stocks that you would like to keep tabs on.

In a revealing university study, hundreds of thousands of trades at discount brokerage firms were examined. Want to know the shocking discovery? Most investors sold their winners for short-term capital gains and held their losers for the long-term (a downright poor tax-efficient strategy). Moreover, most investors took small gains and big losses.

Bad decision - We learned that those "winners" continued upward for the short and long term (unfortunately, they had already been sold), while the losers fell further (oops - still in the portfolio). Why the bad portfolio management technique?

  1. Ego - It's always easier to take a gain and think the losers will come back later.
  2. The false assumption that stocks that have declined are better values
  3. The false assumption that since the stock is already down, most of the risk has been removed.

What should you do about it? Your primary concern should be to manage your risk. Since 1992, stocks Q-Ranked 40 or less have under-performed the S&P 500 in the future. Enter your stock tickers here to get our risk reward ranks.
